Right
here where Tijuana stands today, was once part of the
territory of the "Kumiai", natives to this land
that lived here according to their weather and food necessities.
Around
the year 1829, in this same territory, which at the
time was filed with hills, canyons and a river called
Tijuana, was given to the military and political California
citizen Santiago Arguello Moraga thru the political
chief of the Department of California José Maria
Echendía. In 1976 the VIII city council designated
July 11th 1889 to be the official date Tijuana was founded
as a city.
At
the beginning of the century, Tijuana was nothing but
a small town of only 245 population. The only place
you would find any houses, it would be in the downtown
area and the main avenue, “Olvera” Street (today known
as Revolution Avenue) which was filed with small businesses
dedicated to tourism.
In
a relative small amount of time, Tijuana has grown so
much since then it has become one of the most important
and dynamic cities not only in Mexico, but in the entire
world as well. According to the last statistics, the
population is between 1.5 million and 2.3 million.
Also,
being the US-Mexico border, it has made this city an
obliged passing destiny for many Latin-Americans who
come looking for the "American dream". But
it has also formed an economical and cultural link to
one of the most important cities in the USA, San Diego
CA.
So,
we consider that Tijuana is a land of progress, in which
everyday hard work, responsibility and honesty from
its citizens have contributed to make of this city a
unique place in many ways!
